Using Combined Heat and Power Systems

 

Waste heat created by the use of combined heat power systems or waste heat generated by existing boiler use is an innovative way to increase drying efficiency, lower greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and lower utility costs. We use state of the art systems that are environmentally friendly.  USA Sludge’s open air dryer in Kingman, Arizona, dries biomass material using a combined heat and power system (CHP) that is fueled by natural gas.  This dramatically decreases drying time and can be set at higher temperatures to kill pathogens by utilizing the waste heat.

CHP or combined heat and power systems simultaneously generates on-peak electricity by utilizing the waste heat that is normally discharged in drying biomass and organic sludge.  The electrical energy delivers a high return on investment by reducing peak power charges while providing an abundance of free heat.  The free heat from properly designed combined heat and power systems will save 35% or more over a traditional electric / boiler installation, all while creating a smaller environmental footprint.
